Sandi Madsen– Pottery

Artist Statement:

I create functional pottery, dishes and sets, and purely decorative art pieces; I also incorporate porcelain in some of my acrylic mixed media paintings and framed art. 

I create my pottery pieces, from start to finish, in my small studio in Victoria. Each piece is created with thoughtful consideration of the technical aspects that make pottery easy, and comfortable to use. I also consider creative aspects such as small details that make a piece interesting, unique and finished to a high quality. Every piece is unique.

I believe strongly in the adage quality of quantity. 

Pottery is three dimensional and I consider this aspect in the decoration and finishing of my work.  The bottom is just as important as the sides and inside. I create my own glazes that are stable and dishwasher safe. I source the highest quality materials and purchase locally as much as possible. I am a one person shop so I do everything from creating the pieces to pricing and bringing the work to market. 

When I create pottery I imagine what occasion the piece might be used, for example a wedding gift, birthday, special anniversary, and corporate gift or for everyday use. My pottery is a reflection of where it is created so I often create pieces that are reminiscing of Island living, tall trees, sheep in the field, birds and flowers in bloom, ocean and land creatures alongside the textures and colours of nature.

I hope to engage interest in my art through producing unique items that bring charm and inspire a sense of magic.
